3rd January in the year 1986 witnessed history being made, India’s first Auto Expo was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The 9-day show held at Pragati Maidan was a spectacular success with huge crowds on all the days.
The 1986 show provided an outlet for the transfer of advanced automotive technology and gave an insight into how the Indian Automotive Industry was absorbing and incorporating them into newer vehicles. The show also showcased how the Indian Automotive Industry patronizes indigenous research and development for adapts advanced technologies to suit the rugged Indian conditions.
The remarkable success of the first Auto Show led the organizers to hold Auto Show editions in other Indian cities. Greater Noida was the first city after New Delhi to hold the show while Pune Auto Show made its first appearance in 2004.
Automotive industry in the past three decades across the globe witnessed remarkable developments spurred by rapid technological developments in the auto industry. The decades also witnessed a shift in the center of auto industry gravity from North America and Europe to Asia.
SHIFT OF CENTRE OF GRAVITY
In 1980, North America and Europe generated an astounding 83 percent of global auto sales. By the year 2020, it came down to 35 percent, and both auto production and auto markets has already shifted to Asia. Today, four major Asian nations, China, Japan, South Korea, and India produce and sell more than 30 million cars; and India is the third largest auto market after China and the US.
In 2023, India clocked sales of new vehicles at 4.25 million units, surpassing Japan’s 4.2 million and ‘Made In India’ cars increasingly found their way into the global market. The increased global acceptance and strong cost and talent advantage in India compelled top car makers like Hyundai, Volkswagen, Toyota, Honda, Skoda, and popular Indian names like Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, and Tata Motors to push their exports. They all witnessed during the year a remarkable rise in exports even as other major global automobile manufacturers were looking to grab their share of the lucrative Indian market.

The 22nd edition of the show will have a major surprise for those who have a fondness for old cars and other vehicles. There will be a show titled “The Vintage & Classic Pavilion” showcasing
- Vehicles from the Pune region used by well-known celebrities and performers of yesteryears who will be present in-person at the flag-off ceremony.
- Norton 500, a primary supplier of military motorcycles. It was among the main providers to the British Army throughout World War II. Also, it was distributed to Commonwealth forces including the armies of India, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
- Volkswagen’s Jeep version which was used extensively during World War II. In addition, there will be several vintage editions of Volkswagen that were best sellers during the 1930s-1940s.
- Vintage cars and scooters. Timeless classics that will be on display include Ambassador 1967, Lambretta, Maruti 1984, Vijai Super, Vijai Pushpak, and more.
The four-day auto exhibition will be supported by apex Government and Non-Government organizations in the Indian automotive sector; and co-sponsored by CIRT (Central Institute of Road Transport) with several top and public organizations like the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE), MSRTC, Maha Metro, and other notable names in the automotive industry.
